Discipleship: Five Steps of Initiation
under the Living Word

Part 4
Brother

The fourth stage of affiliation is the level of brother, where the disciple has a profound relationship with the Guru as described below.

The degree of brother is the level where the oneness of the Guru-chela, Alpha-Omega relationship is complete through the horizontal figure-eight exchange heart to heart. The Guru has made his disciple a part of his own flesh and blood. And he has offered to his disciple the full momentum of his attainment as well as portions of his mantle and authority. This is preparation for the master’s ascension and the disciple’s assuming a part or the whole of the master’s office. It is the love relationship exemplified between Jesus and John, and perhaps his own flesh-and-blood brother (or cousin) James.

Elijah and Elisha had the same kind of bond. And so the relationship between brother and Guru can perhaps best be explained by such an example—the most touching love relationship of a Guru and chela. Elijah loves Elisha so much that he does not want to take his leave in Elisha’s presence. The parting is too painful. And Elisha says, “I will not leave you. Wherever you are, I will be, I am going there.”

So Elisha keeps on following him. And Elijah finally says, “If you see me when I am parted from you, you will receive a double portion of my spirit.”

The devotion is so great that immediately the mantle falling upon Elisha makes him the prophet in Israel, and he parts the waters of the Jordan.1 That didn’t come about in a moment by favoritism. It came by the intimate relationship between Elijah and Elisha that had gone on for years as Elisha was diligently taking the path of initiation.

Elisha was an embodiment of Saint Issa, our own beloved Jesus. And Jesus was in a Guru-chela relationship to John the Baptist, who had been embodied as Elijah. So Elijah come again was John the Baptist, and Jesus acknowledged him and said there was no greater born of woman than John the Baptist—his Guru, his friend, his brother.2 This is a wondrous moment, to sense oneself in the relationship of brother to an ascended master.
