Meeting Your Inner Master

Part 1

Once again, good afternoon. We’re delighted that we can have as many of you here as we do. One of the strange characteristics of people who travel across the country to a conference such as this one is that they absent themselves from lectures by spending more time down on Sunset Strip (otherwise known as Nevada Avenue) rather than up here. Then they wonder when they get home, “What did I get out of the conference?”

Well, if I thought these things were going to happen, I would not waste my time on the platform, but owing to the fact that you are here, I will speak as scheduled. I also have an idea some conferees will be back here this evening, feeling that they have done their duty to God—who in reality is themselves—whereas they actually failed, you see, because they failed to apprehend. Then they wonder why God doesn’t shorten the time. He does shorten the time for a lot of people, but for some he does not.

Now we will proceed with our lecture, “Meeting Your Inner Master,” which I know is of vital heart concern to all of you. I think that we should pause for a moment to think about the world at large and the average person today who has either gone to school or is in the process of attending the first, second, third grade, and so on, of school. He has never heard of a master and has no idea that he could ever meet one, let alone his inner Master, nor does he have any idea that his inner Master exists at all.

So we have to realize that for our conscience to be pricked, we first have to create a conscience. Thus, in order for us to be able to meet the master, we first have to know of his existence. Or do we? For we now come to the fact that the soul always knows that there is an inner Master, just as there is an outer Master.

The soul knows this, even though no one tells the soul—at least we don’t think anyone tells the soul, for we don’t seem to remember it. Do you understand that the soul can contact the inner Master? Then what is it that enhances the whole concept of meeting your master but the fact that you already know you can?

The Problem of Self-Interest

Some people say that they have already met their master and others say that they don’t know where their master is or whether or not they have a master, but the fact remains that we all have an inner Master.

Who, in the first place, drew us into the light? Why are we in the light and, for that matter, why do we have any interest in God at all?

If you stop to think about it, we are primarily drawn by self-interest, because we feel that we might benefit a great deal if we met a master. This is one of the concepts I wish to puncture.

I wish to puncture it as I would puncture a balloon, because it is maya and illusion and creates an awful lot of karma for people. In any mystical organization I have ever had contact with, one of the primary things they do is to wait for the master to appear. They all say that when the student is ready, the master will appear. Quite so.

But we tend to forget several things here and we need to be reminded of them. You know, from the humblest teacher in this plane of thought, the ordinary metaphysical teacher, the ordinary occult teacher, all the way up the ladder to the next step and the next—all the way up to God—not one, I said, not one of these teachers can do anything for us at all.

No master can do anything for us unless we make it possible. Saint Germain could appear, but unless we were ready, unless we were in the right mental condition, the right spiritual condition, prepared to get the most out of what the Master had to give, we would get nothing out of meeting him, except perhaps a little more karma, than we would out of meeting Joe Blow from Kokomo. This is because we would not be ready. We would not be prepared to receive the Master’s message, the Master’s blessing, nor would we be able to utilize it.

The same law applies to our inner Master. We have within us a divine ego, a divine id, a divine identity and this is the most important master we could ever meet. So when we meet an Ascended Master, the first thing he does is introduce us to our divine identity.

We should not create the illusion that, vicariously speaking, the master we meet is going to do everything for us. The masters are only going to help us do it, you see. They will do many things for us that we can’t do for ourselves and we can have great benefit from their intercession. But I’ll tell you something. You can benefit greatly from the intercessory prayer of your contemporaries. Did you know that?

The Power of Prayer

Recently, I was under very severe psychic attack. Not only was I unable to sleep but I was also in severe and serious physical danger.  My wife and I were both ill at the same time, as we were under the same attack, usually arranged by the force to coincide with the beginning of a conference. They hope to knock us out so that we will not even attend the conference.

In this case I didn’t bother Morya. I didn’t bother Saint Germain. I didn’t bother Mother Mary. I didn’t even bother God, but I pestered the daylights out of the staff. I said, “I want you to pray for me. You’ve got to have a tag session.”

Do you know what a tag session is?  It’s when somebody comes along and taps you on the shoulder and says, “Please go and pray for the Messengers; they’re sick today.” Of course no one thinks this of us. They never think that we have these crucifixions.

So three people gathered and convoked their little session. No, they weren’t perfect and they knew it, too, but they were trying. They decreed for two hours and by the end of the two hours, I was so much improved I was almost ready to say that I wasn’t sick. My wife was better—everybody was better.

So they tapped three others on the shoulder who came to give the next tag session and by morning I was back on my feet again and all was well. So don’t neglect your contemporaries, who have within them divine grace, divine love and a willingness to pray for you. And don’t sell them short in the fallacious idea of the Cabots and the Lodges. I think you know how that works. They say that the Cabots speak only to the Lodges, and the Lodges only to God!

Actually, this form of spiritual snobbery in the metaphysical circuit can interfere a great deal with heaven’s plans to shower its beneficence upon all of us, because we think that if we go to somebody important, we’re surely going to recover. Well, first you had better exhaust some of the people at home!

Go, perhaps, to your wife or your husband or a neighbor or another Summit member. Just call them up, and if you don’t get results, why, then you can go up the ladder of the cosmic hierarchy.   I never really care who does the work, as long as the work is done, because the common touch is involved here—the common touch of becoming involved with God.

Recognize the Christ in Everyone

In a story by Dostoyevsky, I believe, a poor leper comes to a rich man for help. As the man looks at the leper, he suddenly hears a voice from heaven, saying, “Embrace him! Throw your arms around him!”

Almost in the spirit of Saint Peter, however, who said, “Not so, Lord, for I have never eaten any thing common or unclean,” <1>the figure in the story wouldn’t touch the leper. The leper was too filthy, too unclean.

Then the voice returned and said, “Throw your arms around him; give him your love.”

“Oh no, Lord. Please, not that,” replied the man. “Anything but that, for I can’t touch that filthy man.”

The voice came a third time, with thunder, and at last he felt prevailed upon to throw his arms around the leper. Suddenly the figure changed and the man held Christ in his arms.

It is important that we recognize that God or a rose known by any other name smells just as sweet. We should not judge the outer appearance of a person but see him instead as someone worthy to receive the flame of life. If he lives, if she lives, then there is still hope. And you have heard the saying, s “Where there is life there is hope.”

I heard a story the other day along the same lines that happens to be true and I believe our good friend in the back, Auriel Bessemer, was with me at the time. It concerns the two Arvison sisters, whom some of you are familiar with. They have a little dog here in this town—I’m not particularly a lover of dogs, even though we have one on the property—but they have a little dog and they took the dog to the veterinarian about three or four days ago.

The veterinarian looked the dog over and said, “It’s hopeless. His liver is gone. His kidneys are gone. The dog is gone. He’s as good as dead now.”

But when I spoke to the girls later, they said, “Our God is a good God. We prayed for that little dog and the dog is completely well now and he was cured instantly.” So we see that there is nothing you can’t handle by prayer.

Whether it is finances, health, marriage problems, problems of insecurity (feeling that you’re not quite as good as somebody else), problems of sin (perhaps you want God to forgive you and you wonder if he’s really going to), there’s no problem too large or too small that you cannot bring to God.

Why Do You Want to Meet Your Inner Master?

Why do you want to meet your inner Master in the first place?  What is your motive?

Your motive in meeting a master is always of importance because, you know, you may want to meet somebody who can do something for you. It’s like the old concept of Aladdin and the magic lamp.

You think, like Aladdin, that you will rub the lamp and if you develop enough friction, the first thing you know the genie will appear. Lo and behold, once that genie appears, you will have nothing to do but tell him your desires and he will say, “I am the slave of the lamp. Whatsoever you desire I will do for you.”

That is the concept that many people have about a master. They think in terms of deriving great benefits to themselves and to humanity. Take note that they usually include humanity. This is a touch of magnanimity, as most people seem to feel that if they want something for themselves, they should add in some fringe benefits for somebody else. Why, that might induce heaven to grant their wishes.

It’s as though God could be prevailed upon, and we have two instances where he was. One was, of course, the story of Jacob who wrestled with the angel until the dawn came. At dawn the angel wanted to go and so he strained Jacob’s thigh in this famous wrestling match and finally, at that point, Jacob said, “I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.” <2> So the angel finally blessed Jacob and went away into the dawn.

Another incident that comes to mind concerns the unjust judge and the woman who persisted in getting his attention. You probably recall, some of you good Bible students, how the woman wanted the judge to grant her petition. She had asked him to avenge her of a certain adversary and he had refused.

So she laid in wait for him outside the courthouse and every time he came out, she got hold of his robe, tugged at it and said, “I want you to help me with this problem.”

“Unhand me, woman. Let go of me,” he replied, shaking her off. Then he went on his way and refused to listen. Nevertheless, she kept after him. Every morning she would turn up and pester him until finally he said to himself, “I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.” <3>

Jesus told this story as an example of how to prevail upon heaven, which shows that heaven has already made provision for answering these requests. The trouble with a lot of people is that they don’t prevail upon God long enough or hard enough. They ask a couple of times and then timidly turn away.

Go Directly to God

However, if you think that meeting your inner Master is really a chance for you to get the things that you can’t seem to get any other way, there are other ways to do it. You really don’t have to bother the masters.

I remember a friend of mine over in Long Island who, after starting with a little prayer, would always say when she went downtown in New York, “Saint Germain, please find me a parking place!” (I’ve told this a few times because it’s so appropriate.)

Now, I don’t doubt for a minute that Saint Germain could find a parking place for somebody. I wouldn’t doubt either that Richard Nixon would be able to arrange a parking place for a friend of his that came to visit him at the White House. So, you see, it isn’t impossible for Saint Germain, who happens to be the God of Freedom for the earth, to find somebody a parking place.

But somehow or other, I don’t think we have to bother him because our own Mighty I AM Presence is certainly that powerful. Right?  We can just say, “Beloved Mighty I AM Presence,” and then you can include all the masters you know as a point of honor and they will find you a parking place in due course of time.

The fallacy here is to think that I cannot go directly to God myself.   I can—we all can. So now that I seem to have unsold the masters, which I didn’t intend to do, I want to point out to you what the masters can do.

What the Masters Can Do

The masters are concerned with the major problems of the human race. They are concerned that the Holy Spirit reach a common denominator of the people and that we spread abroad the Holy Spirit until everybody, not just us, participates in it.

This means that the masters and the cosmic hierarchy are concerned with all the evolutions of earth. They have not set up an exclusive club to which we can belong that will guarantee us immunity for our mistakes and guarantee punishment for everyone else who sins against us.

The Great White Brotherhood is not a fraternity of snobbery and distinction in which its members stand in an ivory tower and look down upon mankind as though they were pitiful creatures. The Great White Brotherhood is, in reality, very deeply committed to service to humanity and to emancipating man from his decrepit ideas, and that includes me.

That includes each one of us, and the sooner we admit it, the sooner we come to the proper understanding of how we can join the club and be a part of the action of God in reaching people. Just stop and think about it right now. This building is a true retreat of the Great White Brotherhood. It was ordained by Omega, the Mother of Cycles. It was she who made the pronouncement concerning the flowers.

All the flowers in the building became immortalized and she stated that this would continue because this is a retreat of the Great White Brotherhood. However, the teachings of the Great White Brotherhood need to be spread abroad in this town and we need an auditorium to seat thousands, even though we don’t have thousands. Do you see the point?

We would have great difficulty filling those seats, even though famous preachers in America can fill auditoriums five, ten and twenty times as big. They’re on television, they’re well-known, well respected in the community and they teach doctrines that everybody believes.

So we find that we have neither the auditorium nor the audience to fill it, but I can guarantee that if we had the auditorium, it would be a big step toward getting the audience. I think it would be a tragedy if at every meeting here we had to turn people away from the door, but the fact that we don’t should prove to you one thing: the teachings are not truly being passed out to the public.

Surely that day will come. We know it will come. And it will come because we do something about it. Take this community, for example. Colorado Springs is one of the fastest growing communities in the United States. Why did this happen?

Very few in this town know the role of The Summit Lighthouse in that regard, but the day we came here and the day the Master put the focus of light here, the town began to grow at a much greater rate. The people are not necessarily coming into the light, for, like moths that flit around the flame, they continue their own round, often of darkness and the common mold.

Experiences with the Masters

So, in assessing the role of each one in meeting our inner Master, we have to realize that universal views are needed by all. Many of you here have done much to help the Summit expand its light in the community—not only the community of Colorado Springs but also the world community.

As I see it, the power and presence of the masters’ intentions for humanity need implementation. I see that implementation as a growth in your spirit and in mine, and therefore the role of meeting our master is quite magnificent.

I remember several experiences that occurred many years ago involving contact with the Master. I would like to mention the time The Summit Lighthouse consisted of just four members in the whole world. At that time, Master Morya had commanded that we do a certain thing by saying, “Go and do this.”

I said, “Yes, I’ll do it, but I don’t have any staff and I don’t have any money.”

He said, “Do it.”

All I had in that room was a three-hundred-watt electric light bulb. I was in the nation’s capital, straight east of the Capitol, and I had Morya’s picture on the wall and an old wire recorder-phonograph combination. I had a phonograph record playing “Hearts and Flowers.” A sad moment or a glad one, it was a beginning.

It was a glad beginning, but there were still only four people there and not a lot to be glad about, because we weren’t rendering a great service. We wanted to, but we were just getting ready for it, you know. So the record was playing in that room and there was a rut in the middle of it and the rut was very, very, very deep.

Once the phonograph needle got down in the rut, it just went on and on. You had to go over and lift it up. We didn’t have the money to buy another record so we managed to work it that way. But one day, when Morya was telling me what he wanted me to do, I said, “Well, I’ve never been very demanding to you but you’re being a bit demanding with me right now.

“I think the world of you but I wish you’d think enough of me to demonstrate to me an act of faith that I can prove to people. Then I can go out to people and say to them, ‘Yes, I’ve met Master Morya,’ and not just say it but really know that I did meet you.“

Then I added, “Will you do something for me? Just this once, at least. Please?”

And he said, “What is it?”

I said, “The record is in the rut. You lift it up.”

Well, he never hesitated, because it was just as if you had turned on a beam, a magnetic flashlight beam. Right out of the picture, a beam of light appeared and it struck me in the solar plexus, of all places. The minute it hit me there, my hands were like putty, yet at the same time they were like springs.

They were waving about and my feet too, and it was just as if I was holding a hot line or a cord. You know how it is when a woman plugs in a vacuum cleaner and the first thing that happens is that she throws dirt all over everything, around the rug and the room and over the davenport.

Well, that’s the way I felt. I was just trying to hang on for dear life. I thought I was holding on to a hot rod, you know, or something. I didn’t know what it was.

The light hit me and at the same instant the old phonograph arm went up in the air. Nobody was touching it, except Morya, of course, but I couldn’t see him. He swung it over a bit, gently lowered it down and that’s all he did. That’s all. So some people could write that up and say, “Yes, I met my Master.”
